employment subject to BWSC policies and collective bargaining agreements.

Overview

Position Purpose:

Responsible for inspecting, diagnosing,  repairing,  and maintaining  the Boston Water and Sewer Commission fleet.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Inspect automobiles, small and heavy commercial trucks, and related equipment to locate and determine the extent of necessary overhaul or repair.
  • Perform general overhaul and repair work on gasoline and diesel engines such as automobiles and small and heavy commercial trucks.
  • Inspect, adjust, repair, and replace necessary accessories and related parts such as valves, hoses, belts and alternators, tires, etc.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair cooling, fuel, electrical, and exhaust systems;
  • Tune engines using standard testing equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain hydraulic systems.
  • Performs a wide variety of routine service and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, which may include, but is not limited to, pumping fuel into vehicles, checking/replacing fluid levels, draining/replacing oil, changing/replacing filters, replacing transmission fluid/filters, lubricating mechanical parts, patching/plugging tires, rotating/aligning tires, replacing tires/belts/hoses, checking batteries, greasing equipment, flushing radiators, replacing spark plugs, performing tune-ups, replacing blades, or replacing light bulbs.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment to aid in diagnostics.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals, reports accidents and incidents.
  • Pick up and deliver vehicles and parts.
  • Clean and maintain the garage area and equipment.
  • Maintain records on all maintenance and repair work performed.
  • Operate snow removal and/or sanding equipment as well as tow vehicles.
  • Makes emergency service calls for disabled vehicles/equipment at work sites or on the road.
  • Required to work any emergency as directed.
  • Perform related duties as required

Qualifications

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education, Training and Experience:

High School Diploma/GED. 3 years of automotive mechanical diagnosis, problem solving or repair experience or completion of an automotive degree. Must possess a valid Class B Massachusetts Commercial Driver License with air brakes and tanker endorsement.

 

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. Various mechanical systems of gasoline and diesel engines. Various electrical systems of gasoline and diesel engines. Standard practices, equipment, and tools of the automotive and equipment mechanical trade. Principles and practices of gasoline and diesel engine repair and maintenance. Basic principles of record keeping. Shop mathematics. Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.

 

Ability to: Perform a variety of duties in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing vehicles, equipment, and components. Maintain a variety of shop and repair records and logs. Use various hand and power-driven shop tools. Prepare and maintain clear and accurate reports. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
