Residency Requirement

Employees must be Boston residents on their date of hire and for the duration of their

employment subject to BWSC policies and collective bargaining agreements.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Automatic Meter Reading, read, program, repair, seal and tag, test and install all sizes and types of water meters and remote reading systems including the use of an electronic programming device and perform related work as required.  Check for water waste caused by defective fixtures and underground breaks.  Check to ensure meters are not bypassed or tapped illegally.  Execute simple sketches and plans of water services and meter set-ups as required.  Perform a variety of field investigations and record findings.  Excavate job sites.  Operate pneumatic, hydraulic, electric, and gas hand tools and equipment.  Complete required forms and reports.  Responsible for the maintenance and security of all parts, materials and appropriate tools. Perform a variety of maintenance tasks.  Perform work within meter pits and chambers.  Perform tests on water service to establish usage and test meter accuracy including related work. Employ all safety measures when entering confined spaces.  Perform water shut-off and let-on of water controls, post notices on buildings and notify occupants of impending or actual water termination.  Load and unload stock and equipment.  Testify on behalf of the Commission.  Perform related duties.

 

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.  Must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.  Must have knowledge of all safety procedures and be able to demonstrate the proper use of all safety equipment. Knowledge of operation of water meters; ability to read and program all types of meters and dials; ability to communicate in written and oral form; ability to prepare simple drawings and sketches and do simple arithmetical calculations is required.  Successful completion of any relevant coursework sponsored by the Commission is required.  Required to work any emergency as directed.
