Residency Requirement

 

Employees must be Boston residents on their date of hire and for the duration of their

employment subject to BWSC policies and collective bargaining agreements.

Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform semiskilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the water distribution system and equipment, in conjunction with the direct supervision of such work performed by a small group of employees of a lower grade, this supervision requiring less than half of the working foreman’s time, the remainder being spent in actually working on the project and does related work as required. Locate leaks in the Water Distribution system; shut off and let on water; thaw frozen pipes; provide emergency service on complaints pertaining to water distribution system; perform all safety measures required to safeguard the public, such as the placing of barriers, lights, etc.; remove faulty meters; install connecting pieces to restore service on a temporary basis; maintain simple records and reports; operate truck transporting personnel and equipment to job locations; transport and operate compressor; excavate and back fill trenches; install, repair and replace hydrants, water mains and all other water apertures required in the water distribution system. May be required to perform duties of a dispatcher of emergency crews at night. Assign workers to specific projects, determine the sequence of work tasks, inspect work in progress, may interpret blueprints and sketches, lay out work records, telephone for stock and equipment, responsible for the safety of subordinate personnel, and equipment at all times. Use all tools and equipment necessary in the performance of the above duties.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

 

High School diploma or GED required.  Ability to read, interpret and work from plans and sketches, and to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to keep daily records. Ability to work physically arduous tasks under adverse weather conditions. Ability to deal effectively with orders. Must possess a valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with Air Brakes endorsement. As required by the DOT regulations, Safety-Sensitive Employees will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Required to work any emergency as directed by the Commission or its designee.
